Angela Evelyn Bassett (born April 15, 1961) is an American actress. Her work has been recognized for film and television since the late 1980s she's won numerous awards like two Golden Globe Awards and sixteen NAACP Image Awards in addition to nominations for two Academy Awards and seven Primetime Emmy Awards. Bassett was raised by her aunt in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Her birthplace was and grew up within New York New York. When Bassett was five years old the family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida where they lived with their mother who had divorced from their father. Bassett was in high school when she was able to see James Earl Jones staring John Steinbeck play Of Mice and Men and knew that her dream to become an actor come true. Yale University New Haven Connecticut in which she graduated with her bachelor's in African American and master's degrees (1983). She met Courtney B. Vance, another actress from Yale and they got married in 1997.
